Heath Ledger died suddenly Tuesday, 22 January 2008, just 28 years.
His lifeless body was found by the servant in his apartment in SoHo in New York.
The police did not find drugs in the apartment and no evidence suggestive of a suicide, but only regularly prescribed medicine bottles. An autopsy is performed to understand the causes of death but can not give definite answers, making it necessary to await the results of further studies. On 6 February 2008 the results were made public, and police issued the following statement:
"Mr. Heath Ledger died of an acute poisoning caused by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine"
is This confirmed (as assumed in the early days) that the death occurred accidental poisoning caused by the combined effects of sedatives and anxiolytics that the actor was taking behind normal prescription.
